What is Pilates?“Pilates is complete coordination of mind, body and spirit” J. Pilates Low impact exercises performed against gravity, either on mats with your body and possibly small apparatus, such as hand weights, or balls, or the larger apparatus, such as the Reformer and Wunda Chair in a studio, to strengthen and lengthen the whole body. The Pilates method aims to work all muscles in the body to provide you with a well-functioning body, with strong core strength to support movement and postural strength, correct joint alignment, flexibility, form and endurance. Pilates also helps with the oxygenation of the cells through its breathing, improved circulation, and digestion and lymphatic drainage. Joseph Pilates developed his method back in 1935 and his famous book Return to Life Through Contrology (that was what Pilates called his method) was published in 1945. Pilates has been practised since and has many followers from all walks of life, ages and bodies, from people who want to stay active, to elite athletes, dancers and celebrities.

Why only up to 8 participants in a group?I like to keep my classes small, so I can give each participant personal attention. Pilates works best when each movement is executed in correct alignment, each and every time. A smaller class also allows me to meet each body where it is at on that given day, and adjust any exercise to make it suitable. Pilates is about learning a greater body awareness and accessing muscles with control and in correct order. And that is so much easier with a little help from your Pilates teacher.

What shall I wear?No special clothing is needed, but we do recommend wearing comfortable workout clothing that you can move in but that is not too baggy. Your instructor should ideally be able to see how your muscles and bones are aligned and moving. Gym tights or leggings and a top/singlet are ideal. Please also bring socks with you. We ask that you wear socks for hygiene reasons. If you have socks with grippy soles, even better, but normal socks also work. Avoid anything with studs, buckles, zips, bulky tie backs or belts. Please also remove all dangly or sharp jewellery. We also kindly request to avoid wearing heavily scented creams or perfume to your class.

What if I am running late on the day?We will do our very best to still accommodate you, however, if you are more than 10 minutes late, we may not be able to include you in a matwork class, as the class may have concluded the warm-up phase. For studio sessions, we will try and do our best to still work through your personal program, however, it may be necessary, depending on much time has elapsed, to reduce your number of repetitions or exclude certain exercises to still finish on time. If you are joining late, please note that your class or studio session will still have to finish at the scheduled time.
